Time to Hard Reset and blow this annoying Qtek 2020i phone
Category PDAArghh, convergence hey!
I used to be a pure Nokia person and I have had most of the Nokia's including my all time favourite, the 7110. Then I got a Sony Ericsson P910i and then my troubles started. It seems the smarter the phone the less useful it is as a phone. I.E, i does everything well apart from making phone calls.
My latest phone is a Qtek 2020i PDA also known as a XDAIIi. As above it does everything well apart from phone calls. In fact it sucks at phone calls. All the way from the annoying dialling interface to the signal strength.
I bought a cradle (Silver Shield XDA 2 Amplified Speaker Mount & Cradle for GPS Navigation) from PDAMODS advertised at 27.99 but actually costing 43.74 with a powered speaker to test my Bit torrent downloaded Tomtom. (I will buy a pukka version soon as it is great software) However, just like Richard Hammond (ahh bless) always says it is what they do not tell you that is important. In this case whenever the phone made a GSM connection, I.E. all the time with Tomtom traffic, it would buzz like mad as it was polled by the network. It does not matter how loud or soft the volume is as the signal is picked up by RF induction. Oh, and forget about phone calls!
Some bright spark in one of the forums then suggested that you should use the external aerial. It took me ages to find a supplier and type but it arrived on the Monday from Freedom Mobiles (Antenna Adaptor Lead for Orange SPV, E100 & E200). On the Tuesday I had it araldited into the cradle. It does work, kinda, but you can still hear the network polling and buzzing but it is acceptable.
The problem was that I went with the Battersea Canoe club down to Llangorse in the Brecon Beacons and I took the phone and cradle and solar powered Satellite receiver with. The only problem was that the BMW had a car aerial that obviously terminated correctly whilst taken it with in Dave's mighty people carrier I had no such luxury. Short version, I think I damaged the radio stack by not having it terminated correctly. Now, they don't tell you about that in the instructions either! But hang on...The connecter is usually open and not terminated anyway so it is probably something else.
The phone does still work when it gets a signal but it looses network connection and is generally very bad. In fact it always was bad and the external aerial may be a red herring. Whilst reading the various forums it seems that the ROM can be updated and the Radio software can be upgraded as well. Apparently this may actually fix the problems.
This blog page is all about me ruining my phone then by putting the wrong ROM version on. I have not actually done it yet so the phone still works but I can smell Murphy, he is close, he is watching me!
Just to make sure I stand a chance I am backing the phone up and will do a hard reset first and check the phone. I will then restore my data and check again. If it is my data causing the issue then I will hard reset again and load my data manually. If the phone is OK then I will be relatively happy. If not I am going to upgrade the ROM with a Swedish version! Hey, when you temp fate you should do it with gusto.
The rest of this blog page is about my forthcoming experience. It will be a long night or long few days!
Ahhh, the mighty Araldite Can we live without it!
My botch job seems to work OK.
My current setup:
Rom Version: 1.11.00 WWE - Rom Date (01/27/05) - radio version is 1.03.00 - protocol 1337.42
extrom is 1.11.142 wwe - R 1.03.00 - G 1337.42 - D 1.11.00.wwe - CPU Intel PXA272 - Speed 520 MHz
Ram 128 MB - Flash 64 MB - Flash chip type 28F256L18 - Data bus 32 bits - Storage size 59.68 MB

Backup up the PDA:
Step 1: Hard Reset (18:00)
To hard reset press the Power button and reset button at the same time.
OK done, interestingly it found TomTom and reinstalled it.
Ooohhh, its is installing lots of other apps as well. Hmmm.
Now it is rebooting.
Ok, my phone has been Vodafoned!
No service though, it says wait 15 seconds. Yeah, right.
Ok, unable to register on the network. No change then. Perhaps it is my faraday cage office.
Nope, still knackered.
Step 2: Restore phone (19:00)
Step one, rename the phone to what it was known as before just in case
Read the fine print! Do not use standard partnership for now!
Back from the gym (23:00). I did a a quick circuit and then took my place on one of the recumbant bicycle so that I could watch Arsenal VS Real Madrid. I could not stop pedaling or else I would loose the seat. Damn it was a long session! And Damn Arsenal won or is that Yeah, Arsenal won.
The Restore was OK. There were a few locked files but it rebooted ok. Just busy synchronising now. I do have four bars of signal strength. That can't be bad.
Will test more later
(23/02/2006) Nah, still rubish. I have done another hard reset without a restore to see what its like but it is still pants.
Message to Vodafone: Hi, I have recently been upgraded to a QTEK 2020i. Reception has never been good but over the last month it has become (almost) unusable. MyVodafone number is now permanently redirected to my Orange Nokia. My ROM version is 1.11.00 WWE (01/27/05) and the radio version is 1.03.00 protocal 1337.42. My extrom is 1.11.142 wwe. From the various forums this is a known problem and apparently Radio Version 1.04.00 may solve the issue. Could you please let me know where I can download the official updated Vodafone version of the ROM. O2 has released a version here --> http://www.my-xda.com/xda2i_soft3.html.
Any assistance would be appreciated.
Reply from Vodafone: Thank you for your recent mail regarding Qtec 2020i.
I have looked into this for you and can advise the following;
* you have the last approved firmware from Vodafone for the 2020i.
* I will ask the manufacture for the new Radio Version 1.04. If I get new information about the Radio Version, I will inform you.
If there is anything else we can help you with, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Yours sincerely,
Next Steps - Zap the PDA
OK, I am charging up the old Sony P910i just in case. Time to zap this PDA.
Whoops, wrong! The swedish ROM is old so I need to find a newer rom!
Ok Next one!

Ok, error message appeared saying wrong country but hey...
The Readme.txt file: Simply connect your device to the sync cable and run MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe.
The update will fail, do nothing to the device but run MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe again.
Jobs a good one.
Thanks to everyone who sorted out the I-mate ROM to allow me to do this to my device.
Upgrade Radio Stack is being displayed.
Upgarde Extended ROM
Done
Whoo Hoo. My Vodafone is now O2alised! Take that Vodafone! Selling me a phone you have no intention of supporting. Arghhh.
All seems good so far. Wifi Internet works.
OK, Problem. In my infinite wisdom I did not write down all the Vodafone GPRS settings so this a good time to test the next scenario.
Restore Previous backup (Vodafone) over O2 code.
OK, here goes nothing... Thar she blows!
Works ok apart from a few O2 files that are not there. However, once restored active sync does not recognise the device anymore and you need to start a new profile. Intersetingly the Extended image version has downgraded to the older version. Probably in name only but it can't be good so for now all I want is the various GSM/GPRS settings:
The retrived settings:
Connections: My ISP: Modem:
Vodafone CSD - Cellular line NEXT +447836900884 NEXT (Username) vodafone@vodafone.net (password) ???? (domain) blank ADVANCED 8 none 1 hardware

Testing:
Yes!!! Google is up on Vodafone GPRS
Time to Synchronise.
Please remember to change the name of the device first!
Looking good so far. Yes, synchronised. All OK. Address are back and crummy outlook is back.
Time to restore my Apps.
Priority Apps:
Tom-T-om Torrent (Azureus) - Sorry owners of To-mTo-m, I will buy a copy as soon as this PDA is sorted.
(In my defence I would say that there are several navigation packages out there all doing the same thing. However, not all work as designed on my PDA, I mean look at the radio stack that now seems sorted. I need to be able to test a product properly with my device to make sure it does work. As important, I also need to get to know the product to find its annoyances and see if I can live with it. If so I obviously become a convert and follower and recommender of a product. And frankly, I would much rather buy a product on recommendation that on marketing twaddle. So buy TomTom for your (upgraded) QTEK 2020i or O2 XDAIIi. It is really really good and has few annoyances.)
Now my Tom-t-om is already installed on the SD card so as soon as you plug it in it starts installing. The torrent file has instructions.
Hmmm, third hang when using tom. Ah crap, tomt-om no longer works!
Arghhhh. This has put a dampener on my weekend. TomTom used to work.
This PDA is not supported --> Here , ahh wait it is the exec
This was going so well. Murphy has arrived.
Arggh, many bit torrents later I have it working. --> Here
I have also tried Navigon. What rubbish! Sooo Slow
Anyhoo, next steps.
Hard reset the device to make sure. I am going to install with corporate mode to get rid of bloatware. The password is 0506.

Some of my fav apps:
If you need more apps - go here for 2.5GB of them. There are a few virus in here though but you understand the risks of P2P don't you?
So all in all everything is back as before. My Radio stack is still rubbish and the phone calls still suck. However, I have learned a hell of a lot by zapping my device and recovering it. I understand it much better now and I know where to look for stuff. All I can say is thank torrent.
Have fun!
